War Horse!

I went to the movies last night with a friend.  We started out to see "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close".  I read the book a few years ago; and as I love the books of Jonathan Safran Foer, I wanted to see what they'd do with the movie (despite the lukewarm reviews).  However, checking the theatre listings in Saturday's paper does not necessarily mean that they're the same on Sunday.  We were half an hour too late!

Does your theatre do that?  Don't they realize what this does to people over 50?  Isn't life traumatic enough for us what with our skin sagging, memory lagging, energy dragging?
"Damn you, Dover Boys!!!"

So, we went to our movie pick #2 - War Horse.  I'm not a horse person nor am I a big fan of animal movies in general.  I like animals; but when I go to the movies, I prefer to be wooed, blown up or attacked by aliens.  I simply can't take much more reality in my life!  But this movie has gotten a lot of hype; so off we went.

People!  What a great movie this is!  Outside of the battle scenes, the scenery in England and France is breathtaking.  I thought the acting was excellent; I could literally feel the fear on the faces of those young men in the trenches getting ready to attack.  It didn't take sides -- British or German.  And it gave an insight to a side of WWI that I'd never even considered before --  the hundreds of thousands of horses that were used and subsequently died carrying soldiers and toting guns, etc.

(No animals died in the making of this movie!)

Yup; I cried!  But it wasn't sappy -- well, not overly sappy anyway.  I highly recommend this movie.

I have heard that both of those movies are good ones. Your the 2nd person to say they cried a bit in the War horse. Any war makes me cry so sad it is. Any way glad you enjoyed your movie. Sounds like a great Sunday at your house. Hope your Monday is a wonderful one!

Am considering going - but am such a blubbering idiot when it comes to animals, I may have to take a whole box of tissue in with me.

I'm looking forward to the Janet Evanovich One for the Money coming out next week. At least with that, I won't have to cry (unless they mangle the story, then I may!)

I started crying when the music began playing. I closed my eyes during the battles (most of the movie), and hoped for just one scene that showed people looking happy. However, the title was War Horse and that was definitely a clue that it was not going to be a comedy.

I do think we need more movies that we can laugh at these days.

Woohoo!!! I'm so glad you gave the movie two thumbs up. I've been debatin' whether it was worth a ticket or not!

It's a done deal now.

You have a blessed week sweetie!!! :o)

I think I need to see this movie. My father fought in WW1 and he rode a horse too. He fought in France and Belgium. Thanks for the review. Pamela

We're going to see "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" this evening. I haven't read the book so have no epectations. I hope it's not depressing. I hope. I hope.

I heard really great things about War Horse. I, too, read Extremely Loud... and loved it. I am debating whether I want to see it. I am always so disappointed. Hugs, Bonnie

We'll see it when it comes out on DVD. Sounds like a good one. If you like mysteries, try Anne Perry's series on WW1. Amazing amount of research on an awful war. On the lighter side, I'm boycotting the Evanovich movie. Sandra Bullock was the ONLY choice, and they messed up.

I have heard about both those movies. They sound good. Thanks for the War Horse review. Glad you had a GREAT time, even though your plans were changed at last minute. Our theaters do the same thing. In the paper it will have one starting time listed, on the internet another. Then when you get there it's something else, altogether. CRAZY! Take care.

I have seen ads for this film but was a bit hesitant myself. Next time I am in Montreal near an english cinema I will go. I am usually pretty fussy but I will check it out now!

Your's is the best review of this movie I've heard so far. You may have changed my mind about seeing it - war and horses didn't exactly draw me in.

Hi, Popping in from Linda's A La Carte. I too have had the same problem with on theatre not coordinating the films or the times.

We went to see War Horse. It was an excellent film although I am the sappy snot nosed person in the theatre. I sure honked my nose during this film.

Most people don't think animals are intelligent or even have a soul. I do. This movie just tore me up. So glad it ended the way it did!~Ames

I have heard many people say they have really enjoyed this movie. I haven't seen it yet...and WE ARE horse people (as you know)...hubby especially.
He'll love it I'm sure
WW1 was a terrible time.

I'm going to try to see it this weekend. I do hate to cry at the theater though, so maybe I'll take a huge coat to cover me up with.

A male friend said that every guy in the audience was crying (including him, of course) when he saw it. My husband has mentioned seeing it, but I was afraid I'd be awash in loud, snorting sobs.

Maybe I'll reconsider. You've given it a pretty strong recommendation. (But Starting Over's comment does scare me a bit!)

Add me to the list who cried during War Horse. I'm tearing up thinking of the scenes that made me tear up.

I love horses and I love your blog! In fact, I'm working on a post right now and found Aging Disgracefully when I googled "image of angry old lady." Would I have permission to use this image in my post? If so, please let me know your citation requirements. Thank you! Susan Maricle susanmaricle@gmail.com
