THE 10 SECOND TIDY!

Late Wednesday night & early Thursday morning, I emulated Loonette and Molly from "The Big Comfy Couch" doing the 10 second tidy!
*
Why, you ask?
*
Because at 9:30 Wed evening while I was watching Criminal Minds and lounging amidst the weeks build-up of general mess and squalor, I received a phone call from my mother:
*

"We're in Halifax. And we'll be down tomorrow and spend the night".

*
*
People! I work every day from 9 to 5! And I did not receive a prior phone call from Newfoundland to say that they planned on driving for 200 km - to take the ferry the next 900 km - so they could then drive another 400 km - for a specialist appointment in the city. I mean .... HELLO! Ya might think to call a girl!!!

*
But No!

They're 79 year old!!

And they're from Newfoundland!!

And from what I remember, they have little or no experience in the art of planning ahead!!

*
Anyway, even at my age, I must keep up the pretence that I still observe the state of cleanliness and order that my dear mother brought me up with (and pounded into my very being every Saturday morning)!
*
Ah ..... but now-a-days, her eyesight is so bad that the 10 minute tidy works marvelously. (Don't open that closet door!!!)
*
They arrive; we order some takeout; and later Dad sits with his glass of whiskey while Mom and I share a glass of wine, and the girls join us for a rousing game of Uno! (She usually beats me. Drat those large numbers and easy to see colors!) We had a wonderful evening!
*
*
I took the day off so I could spend every moment possible with them. They're on the long drive back now. And even though I'm not 21 any more, bless her heart, my Mom slipped me $20 before she left (to treat myself because I'm all alone for supper! Little does she know that this in itself is a treat!).
*
I think I'll vacuum, put my face on (the one that "sits in a jar by the door"); then me and my $20 will head to Frenchies! And later, I'm going to put my feet up,eat the leftover Singapore noodles and spend the night watching this:*

It's the opening ceremonies! Are you pumped like I am?

*

I BELIEVE, CANADA!! I BELIEVE!

*

I believe I'll pour another glass of that wine!

Ya gotta hand it to parents! Heeeheehe! Dad always slips us a couple hundred for gas and hotels when we go to Texas. One time he discretely handed me the cash as soon as we arrived, I asked what it was for and Dad said it was to leave on. Heeeheehe! I asked if I left and came back if he would pay me to leave again. He's old but didn't take the bait!!!

Ya'll have a great day enjoying the big 'O'...Olympics that is!

Usually I don't even get a call ahead of time. If my house looks really bad that is usually when someone just drops in for a visit. Glad you had a good visit though at 79 you just have to appreciate the fact that they are able to travel like that. Enjoy your 20!!!

Awwww my gran used to always slip me $20.00 and say, in her lovely Scottish accent "Here, put that in your pocket."

I should look at a map sometime - I had no idea NFLD is so far from NS!

You make me laugh! Amazing that even at "our" age, the thought of mum coming for a visit sends me into a tailspin.
Hope you enjoy the night of festivities!

We are always someone's Child! My Father-in-Law tends to follow this "no advance warning" rule - he is 86 and still traveling - sometimes,he just calls us to pick him up at the airport (using someone else's cell phone!). He likes the element of surprise. Luckily, we always seem to be home.

I am never warned in time for company. I sure am glad the people who visit come to see me and not my house.

I have been known to hide dishes in the oven when company shows!

You are so lucky to still have your parents and that you can still enjoy them. I am amazed at them travelling those distances for a medical appointment, even if it is with a specialist. And Oh yes, do I know those 10 second tidy-ups when unexpected visitors arrive! Uno is also a favourite on my stoep. When you come to visit, we will definitely get a game or two or three in - how is that for encouragement?
